THE WATERCOLOUR DICTIONARY

BY SIÂN DUDLEY

Here are the images you'll learn to paint in this class:

CLASS DESCRIPTION

When we learn to read we start by learning letters and the sounds they make...

We then start to join the letters up to make words, words to make sentences, sentences to make paragraphs and finally paragraphs to make stories.

A young child will take the same approach to learning to make pictures, beginning by playing with the brushes and paint, often making a lovely mess in the process!

Yet as adults, when we begin learning to paint, we want to jump right in and produce a picture. The truth is as adults we have forgotten how to ‘play’ effectively, even seeing such experimentation as a waste of time.

Siân Dudley’s Dictionary of Marks encourages you to start at the beginning, gently guiding you through the process of ‘playing’. By discovering a range of marks first you will quickly begin to see how they can be put together to build pictures. In no time at all you will be painting your own ‘stories’.

Siân says: “Even after years of painting, I still give myself plenty of time to play. There is always something new to be discovered! I am convinced that this experimental approach what keeps me excited about watercolour and my paintings fresh. It is always the first thing I do when I try a new medium!”

For Siân, each individual brush mark is a letter, and so a collection of them will make a word. It is these 'words' that we can use to make a full picture.

Fantastic ideas.   I started to collect some o the objects you used, while I was watching this video. Can't wait to get into my kitchen and pull out the salt and little objects to try too..  Great fun.  I love watching you and listening to you.

Dear Sian, a pleasure to watch you as always. I watched while listening to piano concerto No2 by Rackmoninof. both extremley pleasant but complicated. the difference being that you successfully showed practically every trick in the book. enjoyed it throughly. thanks again.

I put this tutorial as my first favorite. Sian shows the how.  I went through this stage myself made the mistake of not leaving things alone and let the paint work.  I wish I had seen this video a couple of years back. As she said it's getting to know how watercolor behaves. There's hydrodynamics in there, exploiting how water affects the paper fibers by seeping through it , paint will follow its course and leave dry areas alone.  Higher concentration (or thicker paint) will dissipate and create beautiful soft edges, thinner paint or pure water will push paint away creating the cauliflower(s) mentioned, these can be softened and you get marks the brush will never achieve.  The flowers in the urn were one of the best examples of "negative painting" in practice. The way Sian showed it the watercolor painted the painting itself, she just showed it the way. Excellent instructional presentation.

Love this style very much.. I have always been rigid while painting.. My images lack the freedom of movement and color present in this painting.. I will have to practice this and get it right.. You simply rock Ms. Dudley.. Smile
